Mathew Zvondai began carving in 1979 at the age of 20 and has been carving for 17 years. He was taught and encouraged by his father. Mathew lives on the outskirts of Harare with his wife and two children.

His carvings are best known for their stylized and elegant lines of African animals. Mathew believes the lion to be the true "King of Animals". He gives great attention to detail and the expressions of enormous grace, enduring strength and power.

Mathew's frog series carvings emerge boldly with straight lines, clean curves and ever present humor.

The artist's work has been exhibited in the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and various galleries in and around Harare. He has also exhibited overseas in the United States in Washington, D.C., San Francisco California, New York City and at Princeton, University.
