Michael Chiwandire was born on November 11, 1971 in Mudzi District of Marozva Village, Zimbabwe. In 1987 he completed his primary education at Chuinye School where he excelled in art. When Michael's mother, who sacrificed to send him to school, became unemployed. Michael was unable to go on to his secondary levels because of lack of financing. The Rhodesian school system was strictly segregated. White children had to attend school between the ages of 5 to 15 years old, while education was not compulsory for Africans. White education was free while black parents had to pay the equivalence of 13 weeks wages to keep one child in school plus uniforms and books.

After finishing primary school in 1987 Michael went back home to Mudzi, working in fields and plantations. After seven months Michael left because his salary was so meager. His hope was to make enough money to finance his younger brothers education and support for his mother.

At the end of 1987, Michael went to Harare and met a fellow artist and started stone washing and sand papering his work. In 1990 Michael started sculpting on his own. His work is now renowned for its elegant lines and shy reflective and compelling and sometimes sad figures with the emphasis on the eyes showing the importance of clear vision in his subjects, much like Michael, looking both into the future and the past.

Exhibitions of Michael's work have been at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe; Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town, South Africa; Australia; Ghana; London, and Canada. His work has also been shown extensively in the United States including Somerset Art Museum, Pluckemin, New Jersey; Salve Regina University, Newport, Rhode Island, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey; New York City; Washington, D.C.; San Francisco, California; Chicago, Illinois; Providence, Rhode Island; and Point Pleasant, PA.
